The Medico-Legal Society of Toronto is pleased to present an evening with renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Charles H. Tator, who will discuss the need for improved education about concussion among the general public and health care professionals. Concussions are injuries to the brain sustained in sports such as football and hockey, and in motor vehicle collisions, falls and assaults.

Concussions are a major public health issue because they are extremely common in all age groups and in both genders, although repeated concussions are preponderant in young males. The long-term effects of repeated concussions are not well understood, but there is evidence that in some cases, multiple concussions result in dementia, Parkinsonism, and other manifestations of brain degeneration. Unfortunately, the diagnosis of concussion remains difficult and depends exclusively on the clinical interaction between a patient and a trained health care professional.

There is no proven imaging, neuropsychological test or electrophysiological measure capable of diagnosing concussion. Also, reliable measures to assess prognosis and effects of treatment are lacking. Furthermore, the treatment of concussion is very limited.Dr. Tator will cover the need to intensify efforts to prevent concussions as well as effective prevention strategies. Dr. Tator will also speak on the need for further research that is required to discover new diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers and new treatment measures applicable to all phases of concussion and its sequelae of brain degeneration.
